Campus Notes for Feb. 2

Minnesota West will host Program Shadowing Xtravaganza

Four programs will be highlighted at the Minnesota West Community and Technical College’s Canby campus on March 16, from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Prospective students will have the opportunity to connect and explore one or all of the available programs: Diesel Technology, Dental Assistant, Electrician, and Wind Energy Technology.

Program shadowing for students starts at 9 a.m., including hands-on activities and a campus tour. The community is invited to explore Minnesota West’s event in the afternoon and evening with a burger feed and raffle fundraiser.

The Diesel Mechanic program students started the event back in 1997 to raise funds for scholarships and equipment. Each year, the students line up equipment with local dealerships showcasing equipment, they host a burger feed, and run a fundraising raffle.

Through partnerships and community support, the Xtravaganza has significantly grown over the years.

Technical careers are in high demand and the job outlook is only growing.

The day also brings Minnesota West alumni together to connect and see what is new in the industry.

Peter Girard has spent 41 years as a Diesel Technology instructor, and Mike DeVries is in his 6th year on the Canby campus. Both instructors have a long history together. DeVries is a past student of Girard’s, and together they continue the great Xtravaganza event put on each year.

All proceeds from the event are used for program field trips, equipment needed, and student scholarships.
