International Student Award Ceremony April 29 at SMSU

The International Student Organization (ISO) at Southwest Minnesota State University is having its first-ever International Student Award Ceremony at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 29, in the Lower Conference Center. International students that have gone above and beyond this year will be recognized for their contributions and accomplishments to SMSU.

This event is limited to 55 people, including the awardees and invited presenters, and will be held in the SMSU Conference Center.

All international students are encouraged to RSVP (with limited seats available). A variety of international foods from Nepal, Ethiopia, and Nigeria will be served in prepacked individual packages.

This is a formal/business casual event. Attendees are required to contact the center for International Education to RSVP, in addition to a paper sign in at the entrance on the night of the event. Face masks are required at the ceremony.

The International Student Organization Awards Ceremony was created to recognize international students who go above and beyond each year for their contributions and accomplishments to SMSU, also recognized are international alumni, campus staffs, and Marshall community individual/organization/businesses, who have made significant contributions to making SMSU and Marshall a great place for international students to prosper academically, elicits their potential, and become successful in life.

Women in the Workforce panel today

A women in the Workforce panel, with the theme of justice, will be held via Zoom at 7 p.m. today

The panel will consist of Southwest Minnesota State University Associate Professor of Justice Administration BC Franson, Assistant Professor of Justice Administration Amanda Sieling, and Lenor Scheffler, Chief Judge at the Upper Sioux Indian Community. The three will discuss their experiences as women working in a male-dominated field.

This event is sponsored by the SMSU Women’s Center; the Office of Diversity and Inclusion; Access, Opportunity Success; Career Services and the Justice Administration Program.

Panel discussion on support for SMSU students, employees relating to Chauvin trial Thursday via Zoom

A panel discussion focusing on support for SMSU students and employees facing personal challenges associated with the Derek Chauvin trial and its aftermath will be at 7 p.m. Thursday via Zoom.

The panel will include both campus and community leaders who will talk about the support they provide and how SMSU students and employees can access that support.

The discussion will give participants an opportunity to reflect on how they can best deal with the trauma that recent events have produced in their lives.

Those wishing to participate are asked to call Office of Diversity and Inclusion at 537-6169 to receive the Zoom meeting instructions.

Military Youth Sports Fitness Experience April 24 at SMSU

A Military Youth Sports Fitness Experience by the Lewis Sports Foundation will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday at the Marshall Regional Track & Field Complex on the campus of SMSU.

The event is for the children of military personal who are deployed or have served. Those 5-15 years old are welcome to participate.

Retired Minnesota Viking Leo Lewis and his nonprofit organization help teach youth sports fundamentals in football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse and other activities. These basic sports skills are presented to help participants grow in leadership roles and establish healthy living skills.

Those wishing to participate can register before the 10 a.m. start.
