NYPD officer surprises Minnesota teen after chance encounter

PRIOR LAKE, Minn. (AP) — A police officer from New York recently traveled hundreds of miles to reconnect with a Minnesota teenager with whom she formed a special bond two years ago.
Nancy Castro, an officer within NYPD’s counterterrorism bureau, told KARE-TV that she first met Emmanuelle Boschee in July 2017. The Prior Lake teen visited the station while on vacation because she wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement.
“We met a lot of different officers that day, just none that were female,” said Danielle Boschee, Emmanuelle’s mother. “She really wanted to meet a female, someone who looked like her.”
Castro said that Emmanuelle greeted her with a big smile, and then she started crying. Castro soon joined her in tears, and they took a photo together.
“I think fate put us together,” Castro said. “Almost like God put us in the right time, at the perfect moment there.”
Castro said she met Emmanuelle at a time when she was struggling with a friend’s on-duty death. She said Emmanuelle gave her a renewed perspective, reminding her that “there’s another generation behind us that needs that guidance.”
Castro has mentored Emmanuelle from afar ever since.
“She always tells me, I wish you were closer, I wish you were here at my graduation,” Castro said.
So the officer planned a road trip to make Emmanuelle’s wish come true. Castro surprised Emmanuelle at a special dinner, days before she accepted her diploma from Prior Lake High School.
“She’s just like the biggest inspiration to me,” Emmanuelle said.
