Vikings’ balanced scoring translates to win over RTR

Minneota 66, RTR 34
TYLER — A trio of scorers in double figures propelled the Minneota girls basketball team to victory on Monday night as the Vikings picked up a 66-34 non-conference win over Russell-Tyler-Ruthton.
Jaylyn Coequyt finished as Minneota’s leading scorer with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double while Autum Anderson and Sarah Gruenes contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively.
On the defensive end, Coequyt also logged three steals and a block while Gruenes added two blocks and a steal. Leah Coequyt and Claire Rost each also grabbed nine rebounds.
For the Knights, Brezlyn Buchert led the way offensively with 13 points on 4 of 20 shooting while Paisley Thooft and Ava Karbo cleaned the glass with nine and seven boards.
Minneota improves to 3-0 and heads to Granite Falls tonight to take on Yellow Medicine East (2-2) at 7:15 p.m., while Russell-Tyler-Ruthton falls to 1-3 and returns to action on Thursday at home against Adrian-Ellsworth (1-4).
Pipestone 53, MCC 41
PIPESTONE — The Murray County Central girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Monday, falling 53-41 to Class 2A Pipestone Area.
MCC falls to 4-1 on the season and looks to get back on the win column on Thursday when it hosts Edgerton (2-4) for a Red Rock Conference matchup at 7:30 p.m.
WWG 74, TMB 52
WESTBROOK — The Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team got back above .500 on Saturday, picking up a 74-52 home win over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in non-conference play.
WWG improves to 3-2 with the win and hosts Hills-Beaver Creek (2-0) tonight at 6 p.m. while TMB falls to .500 at 2-2 and hosts Lakeview (3-1) tonight at 7:30 p.m.
PREP BOYS BASKETBALL
Canby 69, YME 61
GRANITE FALLS — Owen Peterson erupted for 30 points for Canby boys basketball team on Monday night, leading the Lancers along with Jace Rangaard to a 69-61 Camden Conference win over Yellow Medicine East.
Peterson shot 10 of 24 from the field with six 3-pointers in the win, along with four rebounds, while Rangaard added another 21 points on 7 of 11 shooting with a trio of trifectas.
Will Abrahamson led Canby on the glass with seven rebounds while Casey Hoiland added another five with a steal.
Gavin Torvik finished as the Sting’s leading scorer with 24 points on 8 of 20 shooting with five 3balls, as well as three steals. Adding additional support, Calen Almich and Gunnar Fagen finished with 15 and 12 points, respectively, including three 3-pointers for Almich.
Cooper McCosh led YME on the glass with 12 rebounds, including four on the offensive glass, and tied Fagen with a team-high four assists.
Canby improves to 1-1 with the win and hosts Renville County West (1-1) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. while YME falls to 0-4 and looks to bounce back when it hosts RCW tonight at the same time.
Pipestone 65, MCC 55
PIPESTONE — A strong first half wasn’t enough to get the Murray County Central boys basketball into the win column in non-conference play on Monday night. The Rebels trailed Pipestone Area by a point at halftime, 33-32, but ultimately fell 65-55.
Tristan Behrends led the Rebel scorers with 21 points on 8 of 14 shooting, knocking down five of his nine attempts from beyond the arc, and tied Aidan Swenson with a team-high two blocked shots. His seven total rebounds trailed only Swenson’s eight.
Swenson got four of his boards on the offensive glass, translating to 10 points in the game.
Dugan Kluis dished out four assists and came away with four steals while scoring 9 points.
MCC falls to 1-1 on the year and travels to Okabena tonight to take on Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda at 7:15 p.m.
Dawson-Boyd 76, KMS 66
DAWSON — Gunnar Fagen erupted for a 30-point double-double on Monday night to lead the Dawson-Boyd boys basketball team to a 76-66 win over Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg.
Fagen got his points on 12 of 21 shooting from the field with a pair of 3-pointers. His 10 rebounds were a game-high, as were his five assists.
Also contributing, Carson Stratmoen and Jaxton Hastad logged 14 and 13 points, respectively. Stratmoen also finished with a pair of steals and three assists while Hastad blocked a pair of shots.
Dawson-Boyd improves to 3-0 on the season and goes on the road to take on Ortonville (0-2) Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
