Deutz, Mauch log hat tricks in 13-0 win vs. Waseca

WASECA — The Marshall girls hockey team was firing on all cylinders, powered by Elsie Deutz and Brooklyn Mauch’s hat tricks along with 19 team assists, to cruise past Waseca 13-0 Saturday on the road. Mackenzie Sieve, Elizabeth Garvey and Rylie Messenbrink all scored their first varsity goals.
Haylee Kirchner spent the day as goalie, saving all shot attempts for her first varsity shutout.
The Tigers wasted no time in taking control of the game, putting up a 9-0 lead after the first period. Deutz and Mauch both finished their hat trick performances in the opening period as well.
Marshall dominated with 66 shots while limiting Waseca to just three attempts, including a 41-2 edge after the first period.
The Tigers scored two goals in the first 33 seconds from Nora Holmgren and Deutz, respectively.
Deutz and Mauch accounted for the next five of six goals, with another scored by Peyton DeMuth to build a quick 8-0 lead.
Brianna Foley scored the final goal of the first period with an assist from Eme DeMuth.
Mauch also led Marshall with four assists, totalling a game-high 7 points. Peyton DeMuth followed with 4 points behind another trio of assists, while Abbey Foley also tallied three assists.
Marshall’s selflessness shined in the victory, with Holmgren, Ava Kolander and Eme DeMuth also all giving out two assists, while Brielle Felton Krog, Deutz and Avery Kesteloot each had one as well.
Sieve got the scoring in the second period with feeds from Peyton DeMuth and Holmgren, while Garvey followed behind shortly after with a Mauch assist.
Brianna Foley and Messenbrink scored the final two goals of the day in the final period, assisted by Mauch on both along with Kolander on Messenbrink’s goal.
All of Marshall’s goals were scored on even strength, and there were no penalties assessed by either team.
Marshall advances to 10-1 and will return home today to host New Ulm (3-4) with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
Tiger boys outworked by Waseca in 6-1 loss
WASECA — Senior goalie McCoy Guenther had another strong performance with 43 saves for the Marshall boys hockey team, but a strong three-score second period lifted Waseca to hand the Tigers a 6-1 loss on Saturday.
Marshall scored its lone goal in the third period on a power play by Easton Jiskoot with assists from Brenden Price and Nate Drown. But, the Tigers were outshot throughout the night to fall behind early.
Waseca took a 2-0 lead after the opening period, both on even strength, and finished the game with 49 shots to Marshall’s 21. Guenther finished with a .878 save percentage in the net.
The Bluejays put the dagger on the win throughout the second period with a trio of goals to take a 5-0 lead heading into the third.
Five different players scored for Waseca, led by Griffin Storey’s two.
Marshall played a relatively clean game with just two penalties for four minutes, while the Bluejays had six infractions for 12 minutes.
All of Waseca’s goals were scored on even strength.
The loss marks three straight for the Tigers, falling to 1-4 on the early start to the season.
Marshall will stay on the road for its third of a four-game road trip as it takes on New Ulm (3-1) today at 7:15 p.m. at the New Ulm Civic Center.
