Stratmoen, Blackjacks finish just shy of 5A title

WILLMAR — Despite a valiant effort from eighth grader Carson Stratmoen, the Dawson-Boyd boys golf team finished just short of the team title in Wednesday’s 5A Section Tournament at Eagle Creek Golf Club.

After finishing the first round in a tie for 10th, Stratmoen shot a 76 on day two, the second-lowest score of the day behind Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa’s Brady Schwinghammer’s 71. His performance lifted him into fourth place and qualified him for the state tournament.

Drew Hjelmeland and Yellow Medicine East’s Nick Moritz each shot an 84 on the day to hold strong in seventh place. Unfortunately, they each finished one stroke shy of a state tournament qualification.

As a team, the Blackjacks shot a total of 707 over the two days at the tournament, putting them four strokes shy of BBE and a team state tournament berth. The Blackjacks also beat out Community Christian for the runner-up trophy by one stroke.

Yellow Medicine East finished fourth among teams to make the cut with a score of 736.

Evan Mork placed 10th for the Blackjacks, shooting an 86 in round two to total 175 strokes, while Amos Sather rounded out the Dawson-Boyd scorers with a 205 to place 28th.

James Peterson and Cooper McCosh shot a 180 and 181 respectively to place 16th and 17th for YME while Brayton Hammer was the Sting’s final scorer with a score of 208.

The Class A State Golf Tournament will be held June 13-14 at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker.
