DB comeback falls short vs. CMC

PRINSBURG — The No. 3 Dawson-Boyd baseball team won its opening game of the 3A section tournament against No. 6 MACCRAY 2-1 Saturday morning before being bumped down to the elimination bracket against host team No. 2 Central Minnesota Christian, 11-10.

In game one, Nathan Hansen got Dawson-Boys started early. He hit an RBI double in the first inning to score Kameron Sather and give the Blackjacks an early lead.

Tygan Long started on the mound for the Blackjacks. He threw the full seven innings while allowing one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts.

Long also scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. After singling, he advanced to second on a Kade Solem single and scored when Beau Johnson singled with two outs.

In game two, the Blackjacks’ valiant comeback effort fell just short. Dawson-Boyd allowed CMC to score seven first-inning runs before settling down. From there, the Blackjacks’ hitting worked them back into the game.

Blake Thompson and Aiden Swenson led the offensive effort. Each of them had three hits on the day, including a double for Thompson and an RBI single for Swenson.

Dawson-Boyd scored four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, but its one-run seventh wasn’t enough to force the tie.

The Blackjacks loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh. Yet, a pick-off, a failed steal attempt and a pop out over the course of two at-bats killed the scoring opportunity.

Nate Hansen started the game, pitching 1/3 and allowing seven runs before being subbed out. From there, Thompson pitched 5 2/3 while allowing four earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.

Dawson-Boyd will have the opportunity to redeem itself in the elimination bracket. The Blackjacks will play No. 5 Lakeview on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Montevideo.
