Tiger boys tripped up in section quarterfinals
Nwaiga's pair of goals not enough, Tigers fall 5-4 in OT to Scarlets
MANKATO — Despite a pair of goals from Sean Nwaiga, the No. 5 Marshall boys hockey team’s season came to an end Friday night with a 5-4 overtime loss against No. 4 Mankato West in the Section 3A quarterfinals.
The Scarlets scored the game-winning goal two minutes into overtime. Marshall was called for a tripping minor to put Mankato West on the power play and the Scarlets capitalized to move onto the section semifinals 30 seconds later.
The penalty was the Tigers’ fourth tripping penalty on the night and fifth overall. Of those five penalties, Mankato West capitalized on three of them.
The Tigers led 4-2 with under three minutes remaining in the final period, but Mankato West struck on a tripping power play and then again a minute later with an even-strength goal to force overtime.
Mankato West had pulled their goalie to bring out the extra attacker giving them a six-on-four advantage, and they were able to capitalize twice and carry the momentum with them into the extra period.
“They just had the extra attacker and we didn’t get the clears when they needed them, and they ended up in the back of our net,” Marshall head coach Michael Weiss said.
The Scarlets were charged with four penalties on the night and Nwaiga scored on the power play on two of them. Nwaiga opened the scoring with under 30 seconds remaining in the first period off an assist from Sam Schwarz and Owen Renslow.
In the third period, Nwaiga increased the Marshall lead to 4-2 off another assist from Renslow and Chase Mellenthin. Both of Nwaiga’s goals came on power plays due to tripping calls against Mankato West.
“[Nwaiga] was doing a good job battling in front trying to screen the goalie and was rewarded with a couple of tap-in goals that helped our team out quite a bit,” Weiss said.
Gavin Welsh manned the net for Marshall and made 30 saves on 35 shots faced.
The Tigers outshot the Scarlets 23-18 through the first two periods, but Mankato West outshot the Tigers 16-7 in the third period to take control and finish the game with a 35-30 advantage in shots on goal.
The game-winning goal was the only shot on goal by either team in overtime.
Renslow scored a goal of his own in the second period off an assist from Andrew Seanor to increase Marshall’s lead to 2-0.
Mankato West scored a pair of quick goals to open the third period and tie the game at 2-2. The first of the two goals came on a power play following a Marshall tripping call.
Klayton Weller scored an unassisted goal for Marshall to break the 2-2 tie halfway through the third period.
Marshall’s season comes to an end with its third consecutive loss, leaving the Tigers with a final record of 11-14-1.
“The whole season, I thought this group really brought the effort every night. They came and battled and competed,” Weiss said. “We had our ups and downs, but we can always pretty much count on the effort being there every night.”
