MILROY — After two days of cancellations and a venue change, the Milroy Irish and the Hadley Buttermakers resumed Game 2 of their Region 13C Tournament series, which was suspended Saturday due to rain.

After the ninth inning was played Monday night, the outcome still wasn’t determined. It only took one extra inning to decide the game, as the Hadley Buttermakers came from behind to defeat the Milroy Irish 5-4 in 10 innings.

The Buttermakers overcame a 4-1 deficit to win, as Max Zwart recorded four RBI to help Hadley extend the series to a third game, with a state berth on the line.

The Irish took a 2-0 lead early off of some clutch singles by infielders Ben Heichel and Brady Lanoue.

In the very next inning, Hadley responded as Zwart drove in his first RBI on a single to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Irish would respond, extending their lead to 4-1 on hits by Chase Douglas and Heichel.

However, Hadley wasn’t going to lay down.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Zwart connected on a fastball and hit a three-run home run to tie the ballgame up at four, breathing new life into the Buttermakers.

Hadley had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run on third, but Douglas made a game-saving catch on a Danny Blankenship line drive, forcing the game into extra innings.

The Irish couldn’t score in their half of the 10th inning.

After a walk to outfielder Justin Benda plus an intentional walk to Zwart, Tyler Deacon hit a rope past the shortstop to score the game-winning run.

Hadley’s 5-4 win forced a decisive Game 3 in the Region 13C series, which was played immediately after Game 2 ended. Game 3 to determine a state berth in the Class C Tournament finished after the Independent went to press. A recap of the

series-deciding game will be published in Wednesday’s Independent and available at
