AMATEUR BASEBALL: Strong start carries Milroy Yankees past Marshall, 6-3

MARSHALL — With picture-perfect weather, kids running after foul balls and cold beverages being enjoyed, the Marshall amateur baseball team hosted the Milroy Yankees in a Corn Belt League game and looked to bounce back from a loss earlier in the week to Raymond. Marshall would rally from an early deficit, but it wasn’t enough as the Yankees earned a 6-3 victory on Friday at Legion Field.

The Yankees scored two runs off of sacrifices and took the early lead in the ballgame at 2-0. The Yankees would add an additional two runs, making it a 4-0 advantage. Then the A’s would respond, scoring one run in the fifth inning and adding a two-run home run by utility player Jordan Mernaugh in the seventh inning to trim the deficit to one, 4-3.

Milroy wouldn’t let Marshall get any closer, though, with the Yankees scoring one run each in the eighth and ninth inning to earn a victory on the road, 6-3.  Milroy Yankees manager Ryan Rohlik spoke on his team’s performance in the victory.

“Baseball is a strange game and here early in the season you’re trying to find a groove,” Rohlik said. “Our starting pitcher Isaac Schmitt is a horse for us. I couldn’t be more happier than how Isaac threw tonight and getting the win tonight.”

Marshall manager Ryan Schwagel advocated on the team’s performance and credited the Yankees on their play in the game.

“We played pretty good, Schmitt is one of the better pitchers in the league and we battled but we just couldn’t capitalize,” Schwagel said. “Got to give them credit, they had some good two-out hits, they’re one of the better teams in the league so we can’t get too down. We just have to keep battling, we’re in every game, so just keep getting more clutch hits and we’ll be fine.”

No final stats were available at press time.

The Marshall A’s (1-2) head on the road to Tracy to take on the Tracy Engineers on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. and the Milroy Yankees (3-2) will travel to Spicer to take on the Twins this afternoon at 3 p.m.
