SMSU SWIMMING AND DIVING: SMSU in eighth place after day one of NSIC Championships

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The first day of the 2022 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship is complete with Southwest Minnesota State earning 32 points and currently in eighth place at the nine-team championship.

The four-day championship is being hosted by the University of Sioux Falls and held inside the Midco Aquatic Center.

A total of five event finals took place on Wednesday night with Minnesota State leading the championship with 270.5 points. St. Cloud State is in second place with 229 points, followed Augustana in third place with 217.5 points. SMSU trails seventh place Northern State by 11 points.

SMSU had several individuals, and two relay teams compete in the prelims on Wednesday with three school records set.

SMSU had three teams compete in the 200-yard freestyle relay with two earning team points. Natalie Bohnert, Addi Schroeder, MacKenzie Kallevig and Maija Geier finished 11th with a school record time of 1:38.65 to earn 12 points, while Juliana Villa, Heather Arlen, Quincie Klein and Grace Busch picked up four points with a 15th place time of 1:42.19.

SMSU also had three teams compete in the 200-yard medley relay with two squads earning team points. Geier, Annika Freiburger, Bohnert and Kallevig earned 10 team points with a school record time of 1:49.74 to finish 12th overall with teammates Villa, Kendyl Near, Arlen and Schroeder placing 14th with a time of 1:52.67 to record six points.

Kallevig set a new school mark in the 50-yard freestyle finishing 18th overall with a time of 24.32.

Freiburger placed 20th overall in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:11.50.

Day two of the championship begins today with prelims at 10 a.m. with the finals beginning at 5:30 p.m. Today will feature the 100 Fly, 400 IM, 200 Free, 3-Meter Diving, 400 Medley Relay.

The top three finalists in each individual event and top two finalists in each relay event will be recognized as NSIC All-Conference during the meet.
