AREA HOCKEY: Marshall 12U girls bring home first place at Detroit Lakes tournament
MARSHALL — The Marshall 12U girls had a fun weekend last weekend and brought home another championship trophy from Detroit Lakes.
On Friday, Marshall started the tournament against Dodge County with an 8-1 win. Ava Kolander opened up the first period with a goal and then scored again with an assist from Peyton Demuth. Demuth and Brooklyn Mauch each netted a goal to make it 4-0 before Demuth was assisted by Elsie Deutz and Kolander for a goal in the second period.
Starting out the third period, Mauch scored a goal before Brielle Felton-Krog found the back of the net on the assist by Kolander. Deutz then scored on the assist from Chevi Nyhammer-Atwell and Demuth.
On Saturday morning the team played strong against the St. Paul Capitals, earning a 4-0 win, with Mauch scoring all four goals. That evening they were defeated by Silver Bay 2-1 that put Marshall into the third seed.
On Sunday the girls fought their way through Minnesota Riverblades in a 6-0 win. Nyhammer-Atwell and Mauch were able to get the scoring started each with a goal. In the second period, Felton-Krog added another with an assist from Mauch before Mauch opened up the third period with a goal on the assist from Riley Anderson.
From their strong performance the girls earned their way into the championship game against Silver Bay. Demuth started out the game with a pair of goals in the first period, before Mauch and Felton-Krog teamed up to score a goal in the second. Then with four minutes remaining in the third period, Mauch was assisted by Brianna Foley and Avery Kesteloot for one last goal in a 4-0 win.
Lily Stelter was in the net, only allowing three goals and had an impressive three shutouts for the weekend.
The girls will wrap up their season games this weekend traveling to Windom Friday night and Fairmont Saturday afternoon before returning to home ice Sunday to play against New Ulm/ Sleepy Eye.
