PREP HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Marshall girls get past Windom, boys fall short in doubleheader

MARSHALL — The Marshall girls hockey team entered Tuesday’s matchup against Windom Area looking to break a three-game slide and find its first conference victory of the season. Thanks to a trio of second-period goals, Marshall did just that, snapping its skid with a 3-0 victory against the Eagles at the Red Baron Arena and Expo.

Marshall coach Cassi Weiss said they weren’t able to be aggressive on the offensive end in the opening period, but found stronger opportunities as the game went on.

“We came out a little slow in the first, just kind of sat back on our heels and watched them play a little bit and they put a lot of pressure on us right away and we couldn’t get any chances in the first,” Weiss said. “In the second, once we got that first goal, it was kind of like boom, boom, boom we got three in a row and we were able to hold off in the third where we had a lot of penalties, both power plays and penalty kills.”

Both sides earned power-play opportunities early in the first period, but weren’t able to capitalize. Marshall then had another power-play chance later on in the frame, but Windom was able to keep MHS off the board as the game remained scoreless after one.

The stalemate wouldn’t last long, though, as Leah Schaefer found the back of the net on the assist by Lily Verkinderen with 11:09 left in the second period to give Marshall a 1-0 lead. Schaefer and MHS weren’t done there, as she got another one past the goaltender on the power play on the assist from Shelby Ormberg and Kalyn DeVlieger less than a minute later to make it 2-0. After some back and forth play, Marshall added to its lead with five minutes left in the frame on a power-play goal by Verkinderen on the assist by Tessa Gannott to push the advantage to 3-0 after two.

The two teams continued to trade back and forth play throughout the third period, with neither side taking advantage of their power-play opportunities en route to the 3-0 final.

Windom Area outshot Marshall 27-19 on the game. Belle Deutz earned the victory in net for Marshall, recording 27 saves.

Up next

Marshall (3-4-1) will face Waseca on the road on Saturday at 1 p.m. Going into their next matchup, Weiss said they need to generate more shots on net and continue to put pressure on the defense.

“We need to get more shots on net, we need to play more offensively and just put a lot of pressure on the puck wherever it is,” Weiss said.

MARSHALL — The Marshall boys hockey team fell to Windom Area 5-3 on Tuesday.

The Eagles got out to an early lead with a goal in the first period to make it 1-0 before Logan Deutz found the back of the net on the power play on the assist by Jared Reinsma to tie things up at 1-1 with 13:08 left in the second period. Windom would have an answer, though, scoring three times in the frame to push its lead to 4-1 after two.

Marshall kept fighting, however, and got a pair of goals from Parker Schmitt (assisted by Sean Nwaiga) and Talan Plante to draw to within one at 4-3 with 8:40 left, but that was the closest they got, as Windom added a late goal to bring it to the 5-3 final.
