SMSU SOCCER: SMSU topples Minnesota Crookston

CROOKSTON — The Southwest Minnesota State women’s soccer team (4-9-1 overall, 3-8-1 NSIC) closed out the weekend in dominant fashion, defeating Minnesota Crookston (1-13, 1-9) 4-1 on Sunday afternoon in Crookston.

The Mustangs offense asserted dominance early, outshooting Crookston 12-1 while putting seven shots on net in the first half. The half was highlighted by Emily Maciel scoring her first career goal on a long strike from outside of the box to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs continued the offensive display in the second half, as Jessica Jugovich scored her first goal of the season off a pass from Alex Lotts to extend the lead to 2-0. UMC would score in the 60thminute to cut the SMSU lead in half, but it would not be enough to knock off the Mustangs.

Kylee Bennett would ice the game with her first career goal to stretch their lead to 3-1 in the 77th minute, and Lotts would score in the 90th minute for good measure.

SMSU would finish the game with the most shots (27) and shots on goal (14) since Sept. 28, 2018, when they took 28 shots while putting 22 on net.

SMSU would outshoot UMC 27-7, while putting ten more shots on goal than the Golden Eagles.

SMSU hosts Concordia-St. Paul at 6 p.m. on Friday before traveling to Mankato to face Minnesota State at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31.
