SMSU SOCCER: Mustangs suffer loss in first conference match

FAYETTE, Iowa – Southwest Minnesota State and Upper Iowa women’s soccer teams met on Friday afternoon resulting in a 1-0 final in favor of Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa. The Mustangs were only able to tally one shot on net.

The Mustangs (1-2, 0-1 NSIC) worked throughout the 90 minutes to create looks, with a number of scoring chances on crosses that helped result in five shots. Upper Iowa (3-0, 1-0) scored in the 64th minute, when Katie Samuels netted a free kick from deep to lead the Peacocks to victory.

Kirsten Wetterstrom led the way for the Mustangs offense, taking two shots and collecting the lone shot on goal for the Mustangs. Emma Dahnert, Alex Lotts, and Kylee Bennett each tallied a shot for the Mustangs. Meghan Harkin made three saves in net.

Southwest Minnesota State heads to Winona State for a matchup on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Mustangs return home, beginning their home conference schedule next Friday against Minot State at 3 p.m.
