SMSU CROSS COUNTRY: Ihrke and Tofteland earn top 12 finishes to pace SMSU in Wayne

WAYNE, Neb. — The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s cross country team placed third, while the men’s team finished in fourth place, at the five-team Wildcat Classic hosted by Wayne State College on Friday at the Wayne Country Club.

Catherine Ihrke led the Mustang women’s team with an 11th place finish covering the 5K race in 21:14, while teammate Josephine Lentz ran 22:16 to finish 14th overall.

Brycelyn Hanson crossed the line in 16th overall with a time of 22:26 with teammates Caitlyn Regan (22:26), Macie Langstraat (22:33) and Savanna Busch (22:36) finishing right behind in 17th, 18th and 19th place, respectively.

The SMSU women’s team closed the race recording 66 points. Minot State won the team title with 47 points with Wayne State placing second with 47 points. Aubrey Surage, running unattached, won the individual title with a time of 18:57.

In the men’s race, SMSU was led by Brayden Tofteland, who finished 12th overall in the 8K race with a time of 28:15.

SMSU’s Isaac Engbers ran 28:49 to place 15th overall with teammate John Ziemkowski closing with a time of 28:58 to finish in 20th place. Zack Jones earned a 24th place time of 29:26, Ruben Montoya ran 30:47 to finish 31st, Patrick Jenkins placed 38th at 32:50, while Ryan Russek was 41st at 34:21.

The Mustang men finished the race with 85 points. Minot State won the men’s title with 28 points followed by Wayne State at 52 points. Jacob Jensen from Minot State won the individual title with a time of 26:36.

Both SMSU teams return to action on Thursday, Oct. 7, competing at the St. Cloud State Waxlax Invite at Wapicada Golf Club in Sauk Rapids.
