PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall boys golf team places third at Section 3AA meet; girls team has two individuals place in Top 25

BUFFALO LAKE — The Marshall boys golf team and two individuals on the girls team competed in the final day of the Section 3AA meet on Wednesday at Oakdale Golf Club. Marshall placed third as a team on the boys side, firing a second-day score of 327 for a two-day total of 649. New London-Spicer clinched its ticket to the state meet with a second-round 295 for a two-day total of 605.

“If you would have told me at the start of the season that we would end up taking third at sections out of the 15 teams, I would have said no way,” Marshall boys coach Kari Ehlers said. “We peaked at the right time and everybody put in the work to do their best in a very important tournament. Tuesday and [today] we had our season lows for the whole year and that’s a tribute to the kids working hard and our kids who didn’t have much experience on varsity stepping up and playing with confidence and believing in themselves.”

Luke Ehlers led Marshall with a second-round 79 for a two-day total of 152 to tie for seventh and find himself in a four-person playoff competing for the final individual spot at state. In the playoff, Fairmont’s Brock Lutterman was able to record a birdie and secure the final spot.

In addition to Ehlers’ score, contributing to Marshall’s total were Evan Franson with an 84 for a two-day total of 162 (78-84) to take 15th, Jayden Manthei with an 80 for a two-day total of 165 (85-80) to tie for 22nd, Grant Horvath with an 84 for a two-day total of 170 (86-84) to take 31st, Sam Schwarz with an 89 for a two-day total of 177 (88-89) to tie for 38th and Joey Fossum with an 86 for a two-day total of 187 (101-86) to take 43rd.

Coach Ehlers said their key was keeping the ball in play and avoiding the big numbers on the scorecard for a second straight day, especially with the challenging conditions.

“They stayed away from the big numbers again, kept the ball in play, hit the green and putted well, coach Ehlers said. “It was very hot and with the wind it challenged kids, so we had to make sure we had the right club selection.”

On the girls side, Brooklyn Gossen fired a second-round score of 92 for a two-day total of 188 (96-92) to take 13th place while Grace Ehlers shot a 102 for a two-day total of 202 (100-102) to tie for 25th place.
