Area athletes and teams finish state meet with solid placements

ST. MICHAEL — Multiple area relay teams and several individuals wrapped up their seasons — and for some, their careers — with strong finishes at the Class A meet on Friday at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
Boys
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton
TMB’s lone competitor, Tony Nelson, competed in two events on Friday, and walked away with a pair of medals. In the discus, he recorded a mark of 141-11 and earned an eighth-place finish, but it was in the shot put where he shined. Entering the state meet with a qualifying mark of 54’11”, Nelson shattered those numbers with a mark of 59’2″, setting a personal record in the process. The mark helped Nelson earn a state championship.
Canby/Minneota
Canby/Minneota also had one individual competing in two events on the boys side, as AJ Josephson ran in the 200 and 400 meters. In the 200, Josephson earned a 15th-place finish with a time of 23.40 seconds. In the 400, Josephson found his way to the podium with a second-place time of 50.03 seconds, edging Fairmont’s Hudson Artz by just .01 seconds. Kyler Bade of Plainview-Elgin-Millville took first in the event with a time of 49.63 seconds.
Yellow Medicine East
YME had one lone individual competing, as Silas Whitebuffalo ran in the 300 meter hurdles. The senior finished his career with a 12th-place time of 42.75 seconds.
Lac qui Parle Valley/
Dawson-Boyd
LQPV/DB had a relay team and one individual competing on Friday. The 4×800 meter relay team of Darius Fenske, Caleb Johnson, Payton Sterud and Hunter Martinson took 12th place with a time of 8:31.29. Fenske also competed in the 1600 meters, with the senior finishing his career with a 14th-place time of 4:40.35.
Girls
Canby/Minneota
Canby/Minneota had a strong day at state on the girls side, with one relay team and a pair of individuals competing. Grace Drietz got things started with a photo finish in the 1600 meters, with Drietz just edging Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda’s Morgan Gehl with a first-place time of 5:00.45 to capture the state championship. Gehl recorded a time of 5:00.71. Then Drietz competed in the 800 meters, this time edging Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s Katrina Sortland with a first-place time of 2:17.36 to earn another state championship. Sortland recorded a time of 2:17.87.
Drietz then was part of the 4×400 meter relay with teammates, RyAnn Hansen, Claire Stoks and Braelyn Merritt. Canby/Minneota would earn an 11th-place finish with a time of 4:15.33.
Finally, Aidyn Bruns competed in the high jump and found her way to the podium with a ninth-place finish with a height of 5-02.
Murray County Central
After seeing sophomore Amanda Overgaauw earn a third-place finish in the 3200 meters on Thursday, MCC got things started on Friday in the 4×800 meter relay. The team of Ashley Overgaauw, Brylei Schreier, Megan Bakke and Amanda Overgaauw also made it to the podium, earning fifth place with a time of 9:50.75, which broke a school record.
Lakeview
Lakeview had one individual competing, as Kaitlynn Bot competed in the discus. The senior would wrap up her career with a 13th-place throw of 99-06.
