MARSHALL — After a successful tournament in Pipestone last weekend, the Marshall amateur baseball team came back home to take on the Milroy Yankees. Marshall got a good start, but the Yankees offense came alive in the late frames to earn a 15-5 victory on Friday at Legion Field.

Marshall jumped out to an early lead, as Matt Hmielewski reached on an infield single before advancing to third on an error on a pickoff attempt. After Mason Penske drew a walk, Zach Olson gave them a 1-0 lead with an RBI single before Ryan VanMoer reached on an error to plate another run and make it 2-0 after one.

That advantage would hold over the next few innings, with Marshall’s Logan Terfehr and the Yankees’ Austin Deutz getting into their respective zones on the mound. Then in the top of the fifth, Milroy got on the board when Brian Dolan connected on a leadoff double and Isaac Schmitt drew a walk before Jake Tauer smacked a two-run single to tie things up at 2-2.

The Yankees weren’t done there, though, as Branden Flock led off the sixth with a walk before Matt Bauer and Aaron Mathiowetz connected on back-to-back singles to put Milroy in front. Brian Dolan then reached on an infield single to load the bases with no outs before Schmitt brought in a run on a sacrifice fly and a couple of batters later, Jackson Hughes lined a single to plate two more runs and push the Yankees’ lead to 6-2.

Marshall wouldn’t go down without a fight, however, and put together a small rally in the bottom of the seventh. Doug Mead led things off with a single before coming around to score on an RBI single by Penske. Olson would then connect on a double to put runners in scoring position before Logan Tomasek reached on an error to plate two runs and bring them to within one at 6-5.

The Yankees were right there to respond, using a hit batter and a single by Schmitt before plating a run on an error. Milroy wasn’t done there, as Hughes and Tauer connected on consecutive base hits to plate two runs before Andy Schmidt got aboard with an RBI single to make it 10-5. The Yankees then loaded the bases with one out before Mathiowetz connected on a two-run single to push their lead to 12-5.

Milroy then added three more runs in the ninth to earn the 15-5 victory.

Bauer led the Yankees with four hits and an RBI while Tauer had three hits and four RBI, Mathiowetz had two hits and three RBI, Schmidt and Hughes each had two hits and two RBI and Flock had two hits and an RBI.

Austin Deutz earned the victory on the mound, going 6 1/3 innings while allowing four runs on six hits and struck out 10.

Penske and Olson led Marshall with two hits and an RBI each while Tomasek, Hmielewski and Mead each added a hit.

Terfehr took the loss, going six innings while allowing six runs on eight hits and struck out nine.
