PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall boys golf takes third at Oakdale Invite

BUFFALO LAKE — The Marshall boys golf team competed in the Oakdale Invite on Monday, placing third with a team score of 327. Minnewaska Area took first with a score of 315 while Luverne took second with a 323, Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta took fourth (343) and BOLD took fifth (349).

Marshall was led by Luke Ehlers who shot a 2-over 74 while Evan Franson shot an 80, Sam Schwarz had an 86 and Jayden Manthei and Grant Horvath each had an 87. Joey Fossum shot 102 to round out their scores.

Marshall boys coach Kari Ehlers said despite the windy conditions, she was impressed with her players’ overall rounds.

“Leading Marshall with a two over par 74 was Luke Ehlers. His first nine holes included an eagle and two birdies en route to a 33 on that side. After making the turn with three bogeys, Luke was able to settle down and shoot a 41 on his back nine. The course is one that doesn’t need a driver hit on every tee shot, so Luke had to pick some other clubs to use,” coach Ehlers said. “Coming in at the second spot was Evan. He had a great day hitting greens and putting. Evan has been waiting for today in regards to capitalizing on hitting the green in regulation and getting pars. It was really fun to see his back nine score at a 38. Sam carded an 86 today. I was impressed with his back nine score – he came back with a 40 which was six strokes better than his front side. Sam is certainly capable of scoring even lower than this if he can hit some more fairways and set himself up for birdie tries on the green. Rounding off the final scoring spots were Grant Horvath and Jayden Manthei, both shooting 87s.”

Marshall will compete again next Monday at home against Pipestone Area at 4:15 p.m.
