SMSU TENNIS: SMSU faces strong foes in Sioux Falls and Augustana this Sunday

MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s tennis team (4-0, 4-0 NSIC) will look to remain undefeated as it continues conference play this Sunday with two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches in Sioux Falls, S.D.

SMSU will take on the University of Sioux Falls (2-2, 2-1 NSIC) at 9 a.m. before facing Augustana University (4-1, 3-0 NSIC) at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held inside the Great Life Woodlake Athletic Club.

Augustana, which takes on Minnesota State prior to facing SMSU, has won 121 straight conference matches and has won 10 straight conference championships. The Vikings’ last loss in NSIC play came during their first season in the conference in 2009.

vs. Sioux Falls

•SMSU and Sioux Falls meet for the 16th time on Sunday with USF leading 13-2.

•USF has won the last nine matches in the series with SMSU’s last win coming in 2009.

•USF won last season’s meeting 7-0 in Owatonna.

Series history

vs. Augustana

•SMSU and Augustana meet for the 29th time on Sunday with AU leading 23-5.

•AU has won the previous 16 matches, including 7-0 last season in Owatonna.

•SMSU’s last victory in the series occurred during the 2002 season.

SMSU notes

•SMSU is 4-0 after two weekends of play following victories last Sunday versus Minnesota Crookston (7-0) and Bemidji State (4-3).

•Maja Louisa Harck and Gwendolen Sior are the only two Mustangs that are 4-0 in singles play this season. Harck is 2-0 at No. 5 and 1-0 at both No. 3 and No. 4, while Sior is 3-0 at No. 4 and 1-0 at No. 5.

•Maegan Flight didn’t compete versus UMC last weekend and is 3-0 at No. 1 singles, while Silvia Poulakidas saw her first action of the season last weekend and is 2-0 with wins at No. 5 and No. 6.

•Harck and Courtenay Leonard have teamed up for a 4-0 record at No. 2 doubles.

•Kennedy Torgerson recorded her first collegiate victory versus UMC with a straight set win at No. 6.
