PREP GIRLS HOCKEY: New Ulm takes down Marshall, 4-1

MARSHALL – After falling to New Ulm in a tight 2-1 loss on Friday, the Marshall girls hockey team traveled home looking to bounce back in another matchup against the Eagles. Marshall went toe-to-toe with New Ulm in the first period, but a trio of goals from the Eagles in the second helped them earn a 4-1 victory on Tuesday at the Red Baron Arena and Expo.

Marshall coach Cassi Weiss said despite the final outcome, she was pleased with the growth they’ve shown as a team so far this season.

“We’re still early in our season, just like they are, but we really saw a lot of growth from the team and that’s all we can really ask for,” Weiss said. “New Ulm’s a good team and I felt like we played right there with them other than four good chances that they got past Emma [Klenken].”

New Ulm put the pressure on offense right away, getting five quick shots on goal in the first couple of minutes. The Eagles continued to test Marshall’s defense and would earn a power play early on, but Klenken stood tall in net and kept New Ulm off the board. Marshall got a couple of shots on goal near the end of the period, but couldn’t capitalize as things remained scoreless after one.

Weiss said although they were outshot 20-5 in the first period, she felt her team did a good job of staying with their opponent and praised Klenken’s efforts of keeping New Ulm away from the scoreboard.

“In the first period, I think we did a great job of picking bodies up and Emma did an incredible job of putting her rebounds in the corner and not leaving them out in front for them to get, so it was a combination between the two. Emma always stands on her head and plays incredible against everybody, so it wasn’t really a surprise,” Weiss said. “Going into the second, we really talked about cleaning up our offensive side of our game, being able to break out and get the puck into their zone so we could get more than five shots on net.”

Marshall started things strong in the second frame, getting a couple of quality scoring chances but couldn’t come away with a goal. On the other side of the ice, New Ulm wasn’t able to find the back of the net either, but the Eagles kept attacking and broke the scoreless tie with a goal with 5:55 left in the period. New Ulm wasn’t done there, though, as it quickly pushed its lead to 2-0 roughly a minute later before adding another goal with 2:12 to go to take a 3-0 advantage going into the final frame.

Despite the deficit, Marshall kept battling and capitalized with 10:53 left when Kaitlyn Timm found the back of the net on the assist from Shelby Ormberg to make it 3-1. But that was the closest Marshall got, as the Eagles later scored with 2:28 to play to ultimately earn the 4-1 victory.

New Ulm outshot Marshall 48-19 on the game. Klenken recorded 44 saves in net for Marshall.
