Marshall girls hockey routs Waseca 13-0

MARSHALL — The Marshall girls hockey team started their season with an impressive eight-goal outing against Waseca on Saturday. Turns out, they still had plenty of offense left to spare.

Marshall followed up its high-scoring opener with 13 more goals against the Bluejays, highlighted by a four-goal game by Leah Schaefer, and earned a 13-0 victory over Waseca on Monday at the Red Baron Arena and Expo.

Marshall girls coach Cassi Weiss said they wanted to keep improving from their opening game and felt they did that as the game went on.

“It’s kind of hard after a big win like that on Saturday to come back and be able to play better than you played before, but that was our main goal,” Weiss said. “We came out a little slow in the first but then the second period we really dominated and started to play our game and we looked better than any period we played last game which was our goal.”

Similar to Saturday’s game, Marshall opened the game with a quick score, this time with Kaitlyn Timm finding the back of the net on the assist from Lily Verkinderen and Tessa Gannott just 35 seconds into the contest to make it 1-0. After a few minutes of back-and-forth action, Marshall struck again, as Kalyn DeVlieger fired one past the goaltender to push its lead to 2-0 with 10:53 left in the period. The Tigers weren’t done there, though, with Eliza Holmgren scoring her first varsity goal a couple of minutes later to extend the advantage to 3-0.

Looking to keep the momentum going, Marshall did just that when Aubree Metheny scored a little more than a minute into the second period. That was the start of a strong offensive display in the frame for the Tigers, as they drew a Waseca penalty and Shelby Ormberg capitalized on the power play on the assist by Emelia Barker with 12:21 left. After Timm found the back of the net a few minutes later for her second of the game, Schaefer joined the scoring action with 6:44 to go before following it up with a second goal just 34 seconds later to make it 8-0 Marshall. The Tigers then got another goal by Metheny before Gannott got one past the goaltender less than 30 seconds later to push Marshall’s lead to 10-0 and cap a seven-goal second period.

“We were making tape-to-tape passes which was key and then just getting pucks to the net,” Weiss said.

Marshall’s offense continued to show its strength in the final frame, as Mia Wichmann got a shot past the goaltender for her first varsity goal with 11:02 left on the assist by Regan Loft and Timm to make it 11-0. Schaefer then finished off the scoring with her third and fourth goals of the evening to bring it to the 13-0 final.

Marshall outshot Waseca 38-9. Emma Klenken earned the victory in net, recording nine saves in her second straight shutout.

Weiss added that Klenken did a good job of keeping the puck to the outside and away from the net.

“Emma did a great job in net with controlling her rebounds and keeping everything to the outside below the goal line and they’re not going to be able to score on her from out there,” Weiss said.

Up next

Marshall (2-0) will face New Ulm on Friday at 7 p.m. Weiss said they have a few things to clean up, but added they’re going to continue to keep competing every day.

“We’re definitely going to clean some things up with our forecheck, but otherwise just keep playing hard and appreciate that we even get to be on the ice every day,” Weiss said.
