FRIDAY PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall girls hockey falls to New Ulm, 2-1

NEW ULM — The Marshall girls hockey team fell to New Ulm 2-1 on Friday.

After neither team found the back of the net in the first period, New Ulm got on the board in the second, with Maddi O’Connor scoring before O’Connor got her second goal of the game five minutes later to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Marshall continued to battle, though, as Leah Schaefer found the back of the net just past the midway point in the third period, but they couldn’t draw any closer.

Marshall outshot New Ulm 49-34 on the game. Emma Klenken recorded 32 saves in net for Marshall.

Marshall (2-1) will face New Ulm again on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Boys basketball

Canby 74,

DB 65 (OT)

CANBY — The Canby boys basketball team defeated Dawson-Boyd 74-65 in overtime on Friday.

Will Varcoe led Canby with 21 points while Jordan Ries added 13 and Trevor Gray had nine. Varcoe led in rebounds with 14 while Varcoe, Ries and Ty Stoks led in assists with two each.

Keegon Wicht led DB with 22 points while Gauge Liebl added 21 and Micah Olson had eight. Wicht led in rebounds with seven while Zeke Sather led in steals with four.

Canby (1-2) will face KMS today at 7:15 p.m. while DB (1-2) will face Lakeview on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

RCW 57, TMB 56

TRACY — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton boys basketball team fell to Renville County West 57-56 on Friday. RCW’s Tyler Froland connected on a 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds left to give them the lead.

Christian Wendland led TMB with 16 points while Tony Nelson added 15 and Jake Turner had 10. Nelson led in rebounds with 13 while Noah Swenhaugen led in assists with three.

TMB (2-1) will face CMCS on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

LQPV 68,

Minneota 66

MINNEOTA — The Minneota boys basketball team fell to Lac qui Parle Valley 68-66 on Friday.

Jacob Hennen led Minneota with 27 points while AJ Josephson added 14 and Jacob Citterman had 10. Hennen and Josephson led in rebounds with six each while Braeden Panka and Bishop Drietz led in assists with three each.

Minneota (2-1) will face MACCRAY on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

KMS 79, YME 39

GRANITE FALLS — The Yellow Medicine East boys basketball team fell to Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 79-39 on Friday.

Cody Dahlager led YME with 18 points while Kyle Chase added seven and Caleb Jans recorded six. Dahlager led in rebounds with four while Dahlager, Isaac Jimenez and Tyler Nordaune led in steals with one each.

YME (0-3) will face LQPV on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Girls basketball

MVL 67,

Wabasso 41

WABASSO — The Wabasso girls basketball team fell to Minnesota Valley Lutheran 67-41 on Friday.

Sarah Franta led Wabasso with 11 points while Sophia Hanna added nine and Kelsey Frank had eight. Frank led in rebounds with 11 while Franta led in assists with three.

Wabasso (1-2) will face New Ulm Cathedral next Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Montevideo 87,

YME 53

MONTEVIDEO — The Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team fell to Montevideo 87-53 on Friday.

Shelby Mortenson led YME with 14 points while Hannah Stark added 13, Ruby Bones had 11 and Stella Schuler had 10. Mortenson led in rebounds with 14 while Bones led in assists with five.

YME (2-1) will face RTR on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Wrestling

BBE triangular

BELGRADE — The Minneota wrestling team dropped a pair of duals on Friday, falling to LPGE-Browerville 49-13 and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 43-21.

Against LPGE-Browerville, Peyton Gillund won by major decision while Jackson Esping won by decision and Jayden Gamrak won by forfeit for Minneota.

Against BBE, Destin Fier won by fall while Eric Carrasco and Esping won by decision, Gamrak won by major decision and Jonah Gruenes won by tech fall for Minneota.

Minneota will compete next Saturday against Hutchinson and United at 11 a.m.

Fairmont/MCW

SHERBURN — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove wrestling team earned a split at the Fairmont/Martin County West triangular on Friday, falling to Fairmont/MCW 44-24 before defeating St. Clair/Mankato Loyola 65-5.

Against Fairmont/MCW, Linkoln Carlson won by forfeit while Caden Johnson, Eathan Martinez and Nic Willhite won by fall for TMB/WWG.

Against St. Clair/Mankato Loyola, David Schuh, Ayden Horner and Martinez won by fall while Devin Carter, Gabe Krick and Johnson won by decision, Alexander Schuh and Jeret Ankrum won by major decision and Jayden Torgeson, Jacob Meyer, Noah Ortiz, Travis Willhite and Nic Willhite won by forfeit for TMB/WWG.

TMB/WWG will compete next on Tuesday at Canby at 5 p.m.

United triangular

MADISON — The Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle/Montevideo United wrestling team defeated Sauk Centre/Melrose 78-3 and fell to Kimball Area 43-30 on Friday.

Against Sauk Centre/Melrose, Daniel Gunlogson, Holland Schacherer, Ethan Moravetz, Zander Calusen, Kadin Huntley, Keaton Haas and Trey Teichert all won by fall while Gabe Lowry, Mason McDougal, Dain Mortenson, Trevon Johnson, Avery Wittnebel and Landon Olson all won by forfeit for United.

Against Kimball Area, Kameron Sather won by major decision while Gunlogson won by tech fall, Moravetz, Mortenson and Haas won by fall and Teichert won by decision.

United will compete next Friday at Canby at 5 p.m.
