MARSHALL — The Marshall boys soccer team returned home looking to snap a recent losing streak. Marshall found themselves trailing early thanks to quick goals by Mankato Loyola, but they continued to battle and ultimately used a pair of second-half goals to help overcome the deficit and earn a hard-fought 3-2 victory on Friday at Mattke Field at Southwest Minnesota State University.

Mankato Loyola jumped out to a fast lead, scoring with 25 minutes left in the opening half before a goal with 13 minutes to go in the frame quickly gave them a 2-0 advantage. Marshall continued to attack, however, and was able to cut into the deficit just a few minutes later when Eli Salisbury scored on a rebound to make it a one-goal game again at 2-1 with eight minutes left in the half, which held until halftime.

In the second half, both teams went back and forth throughout the majority of the frame until Marshall was able to get a shot on goal with under 14 minutes to play. The initial shot couldn’t find the back of the net, but Tristan VanDeVere was there for the timely rebound and scored with 13:27 left to tie things at 2-2. A few minutes later, Salisbury broke free before finding Aung Hping for the goal to give Marshall the lead at 3-2 with nine minutes to play. From there, Marshall was able to fend off any late comeback attempts by Mankato Loyola to earn the victory.

Marshall (3-2-3) will hit the road to close the regular season, facing St. Peter next Friday at 6:45 p.m.
