MARSHALL — After getting their first victory of the season on Friday against Worthington, the Marshall girls soccer team returned home Tuesday with hopes of building off its momentum. Despite recording several shots that just narrowly missed their targets, Marshall got one to find the back of the net and that was enough for them to earn a second straight 1-0 victory against Worthington.

Marshall coach Jesus Hernandez said he was pleased with how his team played as a group but felt they weren’t able to capitalize on their shots the way they should have at times.

“I’m really happy with the win of course, the girls are excited and we needed it. Last Friday was just as exciting because we needed a win to get our confidence back up; I feel like the score again doesn’t reflect how we played,” coach Hernandez said. “I think we played a really good, intense game, we just couldn’t find the net more and that’s something that we need to practice on.”

Marshall came out of the starting gates firing on offense, finding multiple chances early on. Then with only about 11 minutes gone by in the game, Grace Gordon was able to get the ball upfield before finding the back of the net to give Marshall a 1-0 lead. After some back-and-forth action, Marshall had another quality chance to score, but the ball hit the crossbar, keeping their advantage at one goal which held until halftime.

In the second half, Marshall continued to attack on the offensive end, keeping the ball on Worthington’s side of the field for several minutes. Similar to the first half, Marshall would have multiple chances to increase its lead, but just couldn’t capitalize.

Leah Legatt earned the shutout win in net for Marshall.

Marshall (2-4) will face Mankato Loyola on Friday at 6:45 p.m.
