SMSU track & field honored for academic performance

NEW ORLEANS – Three Southwest Minnesota State University track & field student-athletes have been named All-Academic Athletes for the 2020 NCAA Division II Track & Field season, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced recently.

Junior Connor Wigand (Manitowoc, Wis.) was honored from the SMSU men’s team, while sophomore Ashlyn Jones (Richfield) and junior Rebecca Manteuffel (Cologne) were recognized from the SMSU women’s team.

To be honored, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 through 2020 spring semester and must have achieved automatic-or-provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Overall, there were 208 men from 73 institutions and 321 women from 93 institutions named All-Academic Athletes.

The SMSU women’s track & field team, under the direction of head coach Kirk Nauman, was also honored as USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Award recipients after posting a GPA of 3.15.
