YOUTH GIRLS HOCKEY: Marshall 12U takes first place at District 4 tournament
WORTHINGTON — The Marshall 12U girls hockey team went undefeated this weekend and took home first place in District 4 in Worthington for the first time ever. The Tigers came out strong in their first game Friday night against Windom, winning 8-0. Starting things out with a goal was Aubree Metheny. Following her were Olivia Lupkes (3), Mia Wichmann, Kendal Beernaert, Piper Mellenthin and Abbey Foley. Assists from the evening came from Piper Mellenthin (2), Aubrey Schaefer, Mia Wichmann, Olivia Lupkes, Kyra Skogrand and Emma Kolander.
On Saturday morning the Tigers then had to take on the Luverne Cardinals. It was another nailbiter, but Marshall held out strong by winning 2-1. Scoring for Marshall were Mia Wichmann and Aubree Metheny.
By defeating Luverne, this led the Tigers into the District Championship game on Sunday morning against New Ulm/Sleepy Eye Eagles. Going into the third period they were tied 2-2. After a short break, the Tigers came out strong and were able to come out defeating Eagles 6-2. Scoring for Marshall were Olivia Lupkes, Aubree Metheny (3), and Abbey Foley (2), with assists coming from Piper Mellenthin, Aubrey Schaefer, Mia Wichmann and Olivia DeGroot.
Belle Deutz was in net for the weekend with a total of 46 saves and one shutout for the weekend. Deutz has a total of 16 shutouts for the season.
Marshall will travel next to Waseca for regional tournament. The Tigers will be playing Owatonna Feb. 28th at 4 p.m.
