SMSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Jenna Borchers named NSIC South Division Player of the Week
BURNSVILLE – Southwest Minnesota State University sophomore guard Jenna Borchers was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference South Division Player of the Week on Monday following her play in a pair of victories last weekend.
Borchers, a 5-foot-6, native of Grimes, Iowa, led SMSU to wins over Wayne State and Augustana and helped SMSU reach 16 victories for the first time since the 2004-05 season. It’s the first time in her career she has earned the weekly award.
Borchers averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and shot 54.5 percent from 3-point range (10-of-16), while also recording eight assists and two steals in the two games.
She scored 22 points in Friday’s 77-60 victory over Wayne State, connecting on 6 of 9 field goals, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range. She was also 5 of 6 from the free throw line. In the victory over Augustana, Borchers scored 17 points on 6 of 13 shooting with five 3-pointers.
Borchers has connected on a team-high 71 3-pointers this season and is just two shy of tying the SMSU single-season record of 73 set by Michelle Bruns in 2002-03.
Borchers leads the team in assists (72), is tied for first in steals (30) and ranks second in scoring (13.4).
Borchers also sits at 11th in the all-time SMSU record books for 3-pointers with 114.
In her two-year career, Borchers has scored 547 points and is shooting 40.6 percent from 3-point range and has amassed 113 assists and 61 steals.
Borchers, a 2018 graduate of Dallas Center-Grimes High School, is the second SMSU player to earn the award this season. Junior Meleah Reinhart earned the award on Nov. 12.
