SMSU MEN’S BASKETBALL: SMSU’s Kenny Byers named second team All-NSIC

BURNSVILLE — The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced on Thursday that Southwest Minnesota State University junior men’s basketball player Kenny Byers has been named second team All-NSIC as selected by the league’s 16 head coaches.

A 6-foot-4, guard from Olathe, Kan., Byers led SMSU in nearly every offensive category this season. He averaged a team-high 16.3 points per game and ranked first on the team with 6.9 rebounds per game. He also was the team leader in both assists (95) and steals (43). Byers closed the season shooting 44.9 percent (180 of 401) from the field and 70.5 percent (86 of 122) from the free throw line. His eight double-doubles on the season ranked fifth among all NSIC players during the regular season.

In NSIC play this season, Byers ranked fifth in the league in steals (1.5), 10th in scoring (17.3), 12th in rebounding (6.7), 12th in assists (3.5), 16th in assist/turnover ratio (1.1), 18th in field goal percentage (45.0) and 19th in free throw percentage (75.2).

In his three-year career at SMSU, Byers has scored 900 points in 93 games with 157 assists and 83 steals. He is shooting 46.6 percent (350 of 751) from the field with 54 3-pointers.

Byers is a 2017 graduate of Olathe North High School.

Southwest Minnesota State finished the season with an 8-21 overall record following Wednesday night’s loss to Northern State in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament.
