SMSU ATHLETICS: Military Appreciation Night set for Saturday at SMSU basketball

MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State University Athletics Department is hosting Military Appreciation Night during the Mustang women’s and men’s basketball games at the R/A Facility on Saturday.

It’s the final regular season home games for both SMSU teams as they face Augustana University with the women’s game at 4 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 6 p.m.

As a show of support from SMSU, all military personnel–active, retired or reserve–will receive a free ticket to the doubleheader with identification or proof of service.

During halftime of the men’s game, SMSU will honor Staff Sergeant Adam S. Thomas, who was killed in action on Oct. 4, 2016, by an IED during dismounted operations in Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant Thomas is the son of Dr. Will and Candace Thomas of Marshall. Dr. Thomas is a professor of accounting at SMSU.

During the 2018-19 golf season, the SMSU women’s golf team participated in the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program coordinated by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association and Golf Coaches Association of America. The Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program (FHMTP) provides the opportunity for collegiate golf programs to honor a fallen or severely wounded American soldier by having a team member carry a golf bag displaying the name, rank and branch of service of the soldier being honored during the school year.
