PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall falls to Waseca in Big South championship

WASECA — In the latest edition of a rivalry between two talented programs to determine the champions of the Big South Conference, it was the Waseca Bluejays that came away with a 57-55 win and the boys basketball conference title on Friday night, not the Marshall Tigers.

Bryce Lance led the way for Marshall with 18 points.

Noah Puetz added 13 points in the loss, while Matt Hmielewski scored nine points.

Marshall returns to action on Monday as it will host Pipestone Area.

TRACY — Tracy-Milroy-Balaton defeated Russell Tyler-Ruthton 75-54 on Friday.

Trevor Larson led the way for TMB with 25 points and six rebounds.

Tony Nelson added 24 points and seven rebounds in the win while Lucas Gervais finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

Hayden Gravley scored 20 points to lead the Knights.

TMB and RTR will open postseason action on Feb. 29.

Cole VanDeWiele added 11 points in the win, while Nathan Ross finished with nine points, four assists and three steals.

WWG (17-8) will host Adrian/Ellsworth on Monday.

MCC will open Section 3A Tournament action on Feb. 29.

Section 3A Individual tournament

CANBY — Area wrestling individuals began their quest toward a state tournament berth Friday at the Section 3A Individual Tournament. Over 50 individuals will begin action today in the semifinals, including 27 semifinalists from teams in the Independent’s coverage area. This total includes nine from Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove, seven from Minneota, seven from Canby and four from Wabasso/Red Rock Central.

All Section 3A semifinal matchups are listed below. Individuals who lost on Friday night can still earn a state berth via wrestlebacks.

Today’s action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in Canby.
