PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall takes out St. Peter to win Big South Showcase

FAIRMONT — The Marshall boys basketball team defeated St. Peter 60-44 in the Big South Showcase on Saturday in Fairmont.

Bryce Lance led the way for the Tigers with 15 points while Noah Puetz added 13 and Josh Baker had eight. Puetz led in rebounds with 10 while Lance and Puetz led in assists with two each.

Marshall will face Redwood Valley on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Jordyn Hilgemann led the way for the Tigers with 20 points while Emily Meier added eight and Abby Wendorff had seven. Hilgemann led in rebounds with eight while Lenei Estrada led in assists with six.

Marshall will face Redwood Valley on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

WASECA — The Marshall girls hockey team defeated Waseca 8-4 on Saturday.

The Tigers got out to a strong start in the first period with a trio of goals. Regan Loft got things started with an unassisted goal with 12:33 left before Kaitlyn Timm found the back of the net a couple of minutes later to make it 2-0. Kalyn DeVlieger then added a goal on the assist from Shelby Ormberg with 1:28 left in the frame to push Marshall’s lead to 3-0 after one.

The Tigers offense continued to show its strength in the next period, as Loft and DeVlieger both scored their second goals of the game just 11 seconds apart to make it 5-0. After Leah Schaefer found the back of the net on the assist from Logan Sherman and Tessa Gannott, the Bluejays were able to get on the board with 11:39 left in the second to cut the deficit to 6-1.

The two teams then traded goals to close the second period, with Timm scoring on the assist from Sherman and Waseca getting a goal with 2:51 to go in the frame to make it 7-2 after two.

Marshall would extend its lead to 8-2 on a goal from Gannott from Schaefer with 10:22 left in the third before Waseca got a pair of goals to make it an 8-4 game, but that would be the closest the Bluejays got.

Waseca outshot Marshall 30-24 on the game. Alexis Moat earned the victory in net for the Tigers, stopping 26 shots.

Marshall will face Worthington today at 5:30 p.m.

WASECA — The Marshall boys hockey team defeated Waseca 5-1 on Saturday.

The Tigers were able to jump out to an early lead in the first period when Jackson Bladholm got Marshall on the board on the assist from Tristan VanDeVere and Braxton Meyer to make it 1-0 before Jenson Meyer found the back of the net a few minutes later on the assist from Marco Bayer and Sean Nwaiga to push the Tigers lead to 2-0 after one.

Marshall and Waseca would trade goals in the second period, with Kaleb Welvaert finding the net on the assist from Bladholm near the midway mark of the frame before the Bluejays got on the board later in the period to cut the deficit to 3-1 after two.

The Tigers wouldn’t let Waseca get any closer, as Marshall got goals from Welvaert and Wyatt Boerboom to bring it to the 5-1 final.

Marshall and Waseca finished tied in shots on goal at 27 each. Dominik Caspers earned the victory in net for the Tigers, stopping 26 shots.

Marshall will face Worthington today at 7:30 p.m.

JACKSON — The Minneota wrestling team placed fourth at the Jackson County Central Pizza Ranch Invite on Saturday, recording a team score of 116. Canton (S.D.) took first with a score of 277.5, followed by JCC in second (170) and Harrisburg (S.D.) in third (161).

For Minneota, Eric Carrasco (120-weight class) took first place while Zack Fier (132-weight class) took second and Kade Lozinski (138-weight class), Jonah Gruenes (145-weight class), Blake Reiss (152-weight class) all took third place. Jackson Esping (285-weight class) took fourth while Cole Sanow (182-weight class took fifth.

Minneota will compete at Fargo (N.D.) on Dec. 27 at 10 a.m.

The Vikings also saw a pair of milestones accomplished in the victory. Morgan Hennen scored her 1,000th career point while coach Chad Johnston earned his 400th career win.

Hannah Jelen led the way for the Lancers with 15 points while Ryann Hansen added 10 and Kayelee Johnson had nine. Hansen led in rebounds with six while Jelen led in assists with five.
