MARSHALL – A four-goal night for junior Kaitlyn Timm guided the Marshall girls hockey team to its second win of the season on Wednesday in a convincing 8-1 final over Big South Conference foe Windom at Red Baron Arena.

Coach Cassi Weiss identified the team’s relentless forecheck as one of the key’s to their success in Tuesday’s win.

“I think we were aggressive,” said Weiss. “We were getting pucks to the net and we weren’t letting up.”

The Tigers got off to a highly efficient start in the first period by netting two goals on their first four shots to take a quick 2-0 lead early over the Eagles. Tessa Gannott opened the scoring for Marshall with her second tally of the season before Timm added the team’s second goal minutes later. Kalyn DeVlieger picked up the lone assist.

After struggling to get into a rhythm early on in previous games, Weiss was pleased with the team’s fast start in the opening period.

“Yeah (getting off to a fast start was) definitely something that we talked about before the game,” said Weiss. We needed to get pucks to the net and we needed to be aggressive quickly. It wasn’t our best period of the three but it was quick enough that we were able to gain some momentum.”

The Eagles proved opportunistic after surrendering the first two goals by capitalizing on a two-on-one rush to cut the deficit to 2-1. The score stood until the very final second of the period when Timm broke through again with .3 seconds left on the clock to extend Marshall’s lead to 3-1.

Freshman Regan Loft continued Marshall’s offensive surge when the second period got underway by nearly scoring on a point-blank chance that was fought off by Windom’s goaltender. Following the near-goal, the Tigers were rewarded minutes later with their fourth goal of the game off the stick of Leah Schaefer with Olivia Macchio picking up the lone assist.

The Tigers went on to add three more goals late in the period as Emmy Barker notched her third of the season, while Timm recorded her third and fourth goals of the night on assists by Shelby Ormberg and Loft to extend the Tigers’ lead to 7-1 into the final intermission.

Weiss praised Timm for her effort on both ends of the ice.

“Kaitlyn always does a great job,” said Weiss. “She’s always willing to grind down in the corners and she skates from one end of the ice to the other multiple times in a shift and doesn’t really ever get tired. So, we definitely need that energy from her.”

In the final period, Macchio closed out the scoring for the Tigers with her first varsity goal of her career to make it 8-1. Marshall goaltender Alexis Moat finished the game with nine saves on 10 shots.

Marshall (2-5-1) will be back in action on Thursday when the team travels to Mankato to take on West at 5:15 p.m. Weiss hopes to see the same level of energy in the upcoming contest.

“It’s a big section game so we just have to take the aggressiveness in the offensive zone and definitely utilze that,” said Weiss.
