SMSU WRESTLING: Mustangs place a season-high 12 wrestlers at the Augsburg Open

MINNEAPOLIS – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team competed in its third open of the season placing twelve wrestlers on Saturday afternoon at the 20-team, Auggie-Adidas Invitational.

Cole Hennen (184), Jackson Ryan (197), and Gage Wevley (285) all placed second for SMSU while Ben Thompson (197) and Nathan Moore (157) were named consolation champions.

Hennen went 3-1 on the day to take second with a victory by fall at 1:29 over Logan Koedam from Iowa Lakes, a 7-4 decision victory over Mitchell Kotschevar from MSU Moorhead, and a 9-7 decision victory over Connor Williams from La Crosse before falling by decision (3-0) to Augsburg’s Tanner Vassar.

Ryan’s second place was aided by two victories by major decision and a win by fall at 6:06 over Bodie Garnier from Upper Iowa before falling to Nick Baumler from Upper Iowa in the first-place match.

Wevley finished second with two victories by decision to send him to the championship match to face Tyler Kim from Augsburg. Kim defeated Wevley by major decision with a 10-0 final.

Thompson earned the consolation championship after falling to Upper Iowa’s Nick Baumler before earning three straight victories, with the final a 4-2 decision victory over MSU Moorhead’s Cory Schmidt.

Moore fell to John Diener from Morningside in the opening match but won the rest of the way to claim a 7-4 decision victory over Noah Parish from Rochester Community and Tech.

Southwest Minnesota State will return to the mat on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Storm Lake, Iowa.
