SMSU VOLLEYBALL: SMSU earns win in four sets over U-Mary

MARSHALL – The No. 17 Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team (17-10, 11-8 NSIC) extended its winning streak to three matches with a four-set victory (25-16, 22-25, 25-16, 25-15) over

UMary (1-27, 0-20 NSIC) on Friday night in the PE Gym.

SMSU toted a .326 hitting percentage with 60 team kills while UMary was restricted to 44 team kills with a .183 hitting percentage.

Meg Schmidt led the Mustangs offensively with 16 kills and hit .452. Four other Mustangs recorded double-figures as Zoe Lier finished with 13, Sarina Smith finished with 12, and Angela Young ended with 11.

Emma Thomssen paced the Mustangs with 42 assists while Payton Hjerleid led the team on the defensive end with 17.

The Mustangs opened the match with a strong five-point streak to end the first set up 25-16. The Marauders rallied in the second set to tie the match up with a 25-22 victory.

SMSU remained steadfast to finish the next two sets as Smith put the Mustangs on top with three consecutive kills to give the Mustangs the momentum needed to finish the match.

Southwest Minnesota State will face Minot State on Saturday for the final game of the regular season with a 2 p.m. match in the PE Gym for parent’s day.
