SMSU FOOTBALL: Nine Mustangs earn All-NSIC honors; Davis, Hollowell and Burns named first team

BURNSVILLE — The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced on Wednesday that nine Southwest Minnesota State University football student-athletes have earned All-NSIC accolades as voted upon by the league’s head coaches.

Senior wide receiver Daniel Davis, senior cornerback Cory Hollowell and sophomore linebacker Onte Burns all earned first team All-NSIC South Division honors, while senior quarterback Boyer Bouman, senior offensive left tackle Zach Stratmoen and freshman punter Adien Belt were all named second team All-NSIC South. Senior running back Max Simmons, senior safety Davaeon Johnson and junior safety Garrett Chapman were all named honorable mention All-NSIC South.

Davis, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound, native of Tarpon Springs, Fla., led the NSIC in both receptions (104) and receiving yards (1,337) for the second straight season. A 2018 first team All-NSIC South honoree, Davis finished the 2019 season with a team-leading 10 touchdowns, with his receptions total ranking third in SMSU single-season history, while his receiving yards is the fourth highest in team single-season history. He finished the season with seven 100-yard receiving games and currently ranks first in Division II in receptions per game (9.5), second in receiving yards and third in receiving yards per game (121.5).

Hollowell, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound, native of Corona, Calif., finished the season with 55 tackles and four pass break-ups. An honorable mention All-NSIC South selection last season, Hollowell registered six or more tackles in six games this season.

Burns, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound, native of Plymouth, led the NSIC in tackles with 108, while ranking fifth with 54 solo stops. He also amassed 5.5 tackles for loss, four pass break-ups, one interception returned for a touchdown and one fumble recovery. He racked up seven or more tackles in nine games, including reaching double-figures five times.

Bouman, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound, native of Pipestone, ranked first in the NSIC in both passing yards per game (259.9) and total offense (257.4). He started nine games (he missed two games because of injury) and completed 200 of 332 pass attempts for 2,239 yards with 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He completed 28 or more passes and threw for more than 300 yards in four of SMSU’s last five games.

Stratmoen, a 6-foot-6, 295-pound, native of Dawson, was named honorable mention All-NSIC South last season. He finished his career appearing in all 44 games and started every game the past three seasons. Stratmoen helped an SMSU offense rank second in the league in passing yards and seventh in total offense.

Belt, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound, native of Sioux City, Iowa, closed his rookie season ranking fourth in the NSIC with a 39.9-yard punt average. He had nine punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line and registered eight punts of 50 or more yards, including a season-long 64-yarder.

Simmons, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound, native of Bloomington, led SMSU with 498 yards rushing on 114 attempts with a pair of rushing touchdowns this fall. He also caught 14 passes for 114 yards and three touchdowns. The 2016 NSIC Newcomer of the Year and 2016 second team All-NSIC honoree, Simmons closed his career ranking third in program history with 28 rushing touchdowns, fourth in total touchdowns (35), fifth in rushing yards (2,390) and fifth in scoring (210).

Johnson, 6-foot-1, 190-pound, native of Sacramento, Calif., started all 11 games in his first season at SMSU and ranked third on the team and ninth in the NSIC with 78 tackles. He also recorded six tackles for loss, tied for the team-lead with two interceptions and had a team-high five pass break-ups.

Chapman, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound native of Sacramento, Calif., started all 11 games in his first season at SMSU and finished the year with ranking second on the team and seventh in the NSIC with 80 tackles.

Southwest Minnesota State finished the season 3-8 overall.
