SMSU VOLLEYBALL: No. 12 SMSU finishes week hosting Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston

MARSHALL — The No. 12 Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team (11-6, 5-4 NSIC) finishes a three-match week hosting Bemidji State (5-12, 2-7 NSIC) on Friday at 6 p.m. and Minnesota Crookston (4-13, 2-7 NSIC) on Saturday at 2 p.m., both in the PE Gym.

•SMSU notched the No. 12 spot in the latest AVCA Top 25 Poll released on Monday. SMSU is one of eight NSIC schools featured in the latest poll.

•SMSU dropped a five-set match to No. 11 Wayne State on Tuesday night to extend its losing streak to four matches.

•Angela Young led both matches last weekend with 21 kills versus CSP and 11 against MSU and led the match versus WSC with 20.

•SMSU holds a 65-30 advantage over BSU in the all-time series record and are on a 26-match winning streak.

•The last time BSU won was a four-set victory in 2003.

•SMSU hasn’t allowed a set victory since Oct. 31, 2014.

•SMSU swept BSU in the last meeting on Sept. 29, 2018, in Bemidji.

Bemidji State notes

•Head coach Kevin Ulmer in his fourth season with a 21-82 overall record and is 8-61 in conference play.

•BSU is 13th in the NSIC with a .169 hitting percentage and 12th in kills per set with 11.32.

•Becky Schroeder leads the team with 169 kills and 2.82 kills per set.

•Following close behind is Julie Touchett with 166 kills and 2.55 kills per set and Haley Stolt who has 160 kills for a 2.46 kills per set average.

•On Tuesday night, Touchett set the NSIC and BSU’s single-match block record with 14, eight solo and six assists, in BSU’s three-set loss to No. 7 Minnesota Duluth.

•The Beaver defense is led by Emma Hallmann who is 12th in the conference with 4.17 digs per set. Hallmann was named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week after averaging 6.50 digs per set when the Beavers went 2-0 this weekend with victories over UMary and Minot State.

•SMSU has won all but one match with a 33-1 record in the all-time series.

•The series began in 1999 with SMSU’s only loss occurring in 2003 with a four-set defeat in Crookston.

•SMSU has not given up a set victory since a five-set victory on Nov. 1, 2014.

•SMSU swept the last match on Sept. 28, in Crookston.

•SMSU is 16-0 at home versus the Golden Eagles.

UMC notes

•Head coach Sarah Rauen in her third season with a 15-58 overall record and is 8-39 in conference play.

•UMC hits .151 on the season with 9.8 kills per set.

•Porsha Porath leads the team with 205 kills and 3.20 kills per set.

•The Golden Eagles offense is run through Sydney Kruisselbrink with 386 assists.

•Katie Lienemann leads the defense with 220 digs and 3.55 digs per set.
