FRIDAY NCAA CROSS COUNTRY: Mustangs compete at NIACC Invite in final tuneup to NSIC Championships

MASON CITY, Iowa — The Southwest Minnesota State women’s and men’s cross country squad returned to the course on Friday competing at the North Iowa Area Community College Trent Smith Invitational. The SMSU women’s team finished in fifth place, while the men’s team finished in 13th place.

Minnesota State won the women’s team championship with 22 points, while Minnesota Duluth captured the men’s title with 27 points.

Kayla Jansky covered the 5,000 meter course in a time of 20:25 to finish in 15th place for the Mustangs. Teammates Skyler Jacobson and Emily Daniels crossed the line in 32nd and 33rd place with times of 21:26 and 21:27 respectively.

Abby Schotter finished at 21:30 to place 36th, Emily Gillingham finished at 22:24 to earn a 52nd place mark, while Meghan Sullivan ran 22:38 to finish in 56th.

For the SMSU men’s team, Clayton Hartle ran 28:38 in the 8,000 meter race to finish with the Mustangs’ fastest time. Ryan Russek ran 29:00, Logan Knutson recorded a time of 29:05, Joey Fausel finished with a time of 30:25, while Isaac Fischer crossed at 35:46.

Southwest Minnesota State will now have two weeks off before competing at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships in Wayne, Neb., on Oct. 26.
