SMSU VOLLEYBALL: SMSU closes opening weekend with victory over Wisconsin-Parkside

HOUGHTON, Mich.- After dropping the first match of the season to open the Michigan Tech Classic, the No. 9-ranked Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team capped off three consecutive victories with a four-set victory over Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday morning.

SMSU (3-1) earned 25-15, 25-14, 21-25, and 25-15 set finals over Wisconsin-Parkside (1-2) in the final day of the tournament.

Meg Schmidt was the Mustang offensive leader with 19 kills and a .395 hitting percentage, while newcomer Lydia Sussner contributed 12 kills and a .476 hitting percentage

Emma Thomssen dished out 30 assists to contribute to her total of 117 assists in the opening weekend.

Mustang defense had four players in double digits as Payton Hjerleid led with 15 digs, Rachel Fink added 14, and Emma Thomssen and Angela Young contributed 10 each.

SMSU’s right-side hitter also added a career-high 10 kills in the victory.

SMSU capped off the weekend with a strong start in set one and two with a .528 hitting percentage alone in set two.

The Rangers rallied in set three to utilize a five-point run to gain a 16-13 to go on to pick up the set three victory.

The Mustangs responded in set four to gain an early lead, finished by a five-point run at the very end to finish set four, 25-15.

Southwest Minnesota State travels to the Colorado Premier Challenge to open the tournament on Friday versus Tarleton State (Texas) at 12 p.m. The Mustangs take on MSU Denver at 7 p.m. the same day before tournament play begins.
