SMSU SOCCER: SMSU hosts Augustana in the conference opener today

MARSHALL – The Southwest Minnesota State women’s soccer team (2-0) hosts Augustana (2-1) today at 6 p.m. and Wayne State (0-1-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m. to conclude the conference opening weekend at Mattke Field in the Schwan Regional Event Center.

•The Mustangs opened the regular season with back-to-back victories over nonconference opponents Black Hills State and William Jewell (Mo.).

•SMSU kicked off the 2019 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Black Hills State in the home opener, and then traveled to Liberty, Mo., for a 1-0 victory over William Jewell.

•Erin Fisher leads the team in scoring with two this season.

•Head coach Brandon Barkus has a career record 139-94-27 overall and 103-58-20 in the conference.

•Sylvia Fehr leads the team in scoring with three goals off nine shots, five of them on goal.

•Grace Behm and Josie Arduser both have double-digit shots this season with 12 and 14 respectively.

•Claudia Pueschner is the leading GK with a 2-1 record with three appearances, 15 saves and one shutout.

Wayne State game preview

•This will be the 29th meeting in series history, with SMSU holding a 15-10-3 advantage.

•SMSU have won four of the last five games, the last a 4-3 victory in overtime in Wayne, Neb.

Wayne State notes

•Head coach Joe Cleary has a career record 8-20-7 overall and 1-17-6 in the conference.

•The Wildcats lost in a 1-0 shutout in the season opener, to tie the next to games with scoreless draws.

•WSC has yet to score a goal this season.

•Megan Phillips leads in shots with eight, seven of them on goal.

•Rachel Grisham is the sole goalkeeper with 10 saves and two shutouts.

Between the Posts

•SMSU’s true freshman Amanda Haimes made her collegiate debut on the season opener for the Mustangs.

•Haimes played all 90 minutes and picked up the victory.

•Haimes now has a 2-0 record with four saves and one shutout.

Mustang leaders

•The Mustangs are led in scoring by Erin Fisher with two goals on the season. Fisher has three shots total with two on goal.

•Abbey Hoisington leads the team in shots with nine, all of them on goal, followed by Alli Miskowiec with seven shots, all of them on goal.

SMSU take the first conference road weekend of the season at Northern State on Friday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 29 at MSU Moorhead at 1 p.m.
