SMSU CROSS COUNTRY: SMSU concludes first meet of season on Friday

Women’s team places 19th, men’s team 26th

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State women’s and men’s cross country teams opened the 2019 season on Friday night competing at the Augustana Twilight at Yankton Trail Park.

The SMSU women’s team finished 19th out of 25 teams with 549 points while the men’s team placed 26th with 769 points. The University of South Dakota won the women’s title with 40 points, while the University of Nebraska won the men’s meet with 69 points.

Kayla Jansky led the Mustangs with a 93rd place finish as she covered the 5K race with a time of 19:42. Emily Gillingham placed 173rd with a time of 21:06, followed by Avery Lester at 21:14 to finish in 188th. Emily Daniels crossed the line at 21:20 to finish 195th, Abby Schotter ran 21:35 to place 211th, while Skyler Jacobson finished in 236th with a time of 22:11.

Clayton Hartle was the highest finisher for the men’s team in the four-mile race crossing the line at 22:02 to place 181st. Logan Knutson finished 211th with a time of 22:28, Joey Fausel was 211th at 22:28, Ryan Russek ran 23:10 to finish 251st, Camden Barta placed 286th with a time of 24:55, while Issac Fischer finished 293rd at 25:38.

Southwest Minnesota State returns to action on Sept. 14 at the Dakota State Invite in Madison, S.D.
