PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Tigers top St. Peter 97-89

ST. PETER — The Marshall swim and dive team earned a signature victory in its road matchup on Tuesday, defeating St. Peter 97-89. The win marked the first victory for the Tigers over the Saints in three years.

The meet would be decided in the final event of the night, the 400 yard freestyle relay. In a tight race, the Marshall team of Nyssa Bentz, Kaylie Stucke, Lydia Hurst and Amelie Schmidtke emerged victorious with a time of 3:50.11 to capture first place and a win for the Tigers.

Bentz also won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:17.85, while winning the 100 freestyle in 53.46 seconds.

Stucke (5:39.81) and Hurst (5:41.21) finished first and second, respectively, in the 500 freestyle.

Schmidtke won the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.48.

Schmidtke (2:01.31) and Hurst (2:07.28) took the top two spots in the 200 freestyle.

Bentz, Stucke, Hurst and Schmidtke also combined to finish the 200 freestyle relay with a first-place time of 1:44.08.

The team of Mansi Bell, Emma Beavers, Maddie Larson and Clara Bader placed second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:06.46.

Marshall will return to action Saturday at the Maroon and Gold Invite in Minneapolis.

WORTHINGTON — The Marshall Tigers volleyball team is in the middle of a three-week stretch away from home. The Tigers kept their unbeaten streak away from home alive with a 3-0 (25-5, 25-13, 25-15) sweep of Worthington on Tuesday.

“The kids came out with a lot of energy in Set 1 and it really set the tone,” Marshall coach Dan Westby said after the match. Overall, we played pretty clean tonight without a lot of errors.”

Paige Andries and Jordyn Hilgemann led the Tigers with nine kills apiece.

Logan Sherman added five kills and 15 set assists in the win.

Marshall (10-2) continues its road stretch on Thursday across the state border in Brookings.

Abby Hennen led the way for the Vikings with 14 kills while Abby Frie added 11 and Natalee Rolbiecki had six. Rolbiecki led in digs with nine while Morgan and Abby Hennen each added seven. Ireland Stassen led in set assists with 23 while McKenna Yost had 14 and Abby Hennen led in blocks with three.

Minneota (11-1) will face Dawson-Boyd on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

LeAnn Stensrud led the way for the Lakers with 15 kills while Kiana Imes and Savannah Rausch each added 10 and Bradlyn Gniffke had seven. Sydney Geistfeld led in digs with 14 while Stensrud had 10 and Savanna Louwagie and Imes each had six. Kaitlin Fischer led in set assists with 38 while Stensrud recorded five service aces.

Lakeview (9-1) will face Central Minnesota Christian on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

Langerock led in set assists with 36 while Hensch recorded two service aces.

Cross country

Run the Lakes Invite

ST. BONIFACIOUS — Competing against a number of opponents they’ll see at the section and state meets, the Marshall girls cross country team came away with a first place finish at the Run the Lakes Invitational held at Crown College.

Marshall placed first with a team score of 56 points, followed by host school Waconia in second place with a team total of 84. Buffalo finished third at 100, followed by Chanhassen (105) and Belle Plaine (111). Mankato East finished sixth at 122, followed by New Prague with 144 points. Rounding out the team scores were Delano (205), Rockford (228), LeSueur-Henderson (259), Dassel-Cokato (274), Watertown-Mayer (304) and Chaska (314).

Leading the pack for Marshall was Natalee Sample, who placed fifth with a time of 16:54.4. Jersey Leysen added a ninth-place time of 17:44.8.

The final three scoring individuals for the Tigers finihed within 20 seconds of each other. Cameen McFarquhar (18:09.3) and Miracle Tucker (18:20.1) finished back-to-back in 14th and 15th place, respectively. Allyson Sample followed behind with a time of 18:26.1 for 17th place.

The Marshall cross country teams will travel to Milaca for an invitational on Saturday.

WORTHINGTON – The Marshall girls tennis team defeated Worthington 5-2 on Tuesday.

At No. 1 singles, Gionna Parsa defeated Worthington’s Kessey Aljets 6-0, 6-3 while Eden Knudson defeated Ivy Jenson 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. Lexi Moat defeated Marah Darling 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot while Mariah Bergjord defeated Taya Oberloh 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot.

In doubles action, the team of Kaia Christensen and Maggie Tabaka fell to Worthington’s Maggie Putnam and Cynthia Souksavath 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. Regan Loft and Leah Schaefer defeated Worthington’s Jasmine Riley and Kya Nickel 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot and Danielle Ewing and Kelli Remme fell to Worthington’s Neveah Schreiber and Cindy Hernandez 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot.

Marshall will compete again on Thursday against St. James Area.

MORRIS – The Yellow Medicine East girls tennis team fell to MACA/WCA 7-0 on Tuesday.

At No. 1 singles, Emily Johnson fell to MACA/WCA’s Abbigail Athey 6-3, 6-3 while Cherish Hammer fell to MACA/WCA’s Katelyn Wehking 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. Macie Sik fell to MACA/WCA’s Ryanne Long 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot while Kyra Kvam fell to MACA/WCA’s Katie Messner 6-7, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot.

In doubles action, the team of Tiana Rupp and Ashley Niemeyer fell to MACA/WCA’s Greta Hentges and Kassidy Girard 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot while Katelyn Luepke and Hope Foy fell to MACA/WCA’s Hannah Wutzke and Lakia Manska 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. MACA/WCA’s Ireland Winter and Breanna Schmidgall won by forfeit at the No. 3 spot.

Rylie Hess led the way for the Knights with 11 kills while Haley Muenchow added 10 and Kylea Baartman had nine.

Maddi Wendland led in digs with 23 while Kalleigh Carr and Baartman each had 16 and Mckinley Schreurs added 15. Schreurs also led in set assists with 35 while Muenchow led in blocks with seven.
