PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Sting pick up first win of season against MACCRAY

GRANITE FALLS — Yellow Medicine East used strong defense to defeat MACCRAY 20-14 on Friday, earning its first win of the season.

The Sting defense forced two fumbles, recorded an interception, and blocked a punt in the win.

Carter Sneller ran for 84 yards and a touchdown in the win while adding four receptions for 77 yards and two scores.

YME (1-2) will host Lakeview on Sep. 20.

Minneota 22, RTR 18

TYLER — The No. 4-ranked team in Class A survived a scare as Minneota used a late scoring drive to defeat Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 22-18 on Friday night.

The game went back and forth all night long with four lead changes and one tie. The last time the lead changed hands was late in the fourth quarter, as Minneota capped a 97-yard drive with a 19-yard rushing touchdown from Blake Reiss.

Cole Sanow led the Minneota rushing attack with 117 yards and a score on 23 carries, while Reiss and quarterback Kade Lozinski added rushing touchdowns.

RTR quarterback Payton Hess threw for 162 yards and two touchdowns and added 79 yards and a touchdown on the ground in the loss.

Both teams will return to action on Sep. 20 as Minneota (3-0) will host Lac qui Parle Valley and RTR (0-3) will travel to Canby.

WESTBROOK — Red Rock Central defeated Westbrook-Walnut Grove 16-6 on Friday.

The WWG offense was held in check. Ethan Mischke threw for just 94 yards in the loss, while leading rusher Jace Paplow ran for just 60 yards.

The Chargers finally got on the board in the fourth quarter on a 50-yard pass from Cole VanDeWielde to Paplow.

WWG (0-3) will travel to Nicollet on Sep. 20.

LQPV/DB 5, YME 2

GRANITE FALLS — Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd defeated Yellow Medicine East 5-2 in girls tennis action on Thursday.

The two teams split the singles matches. Anna Hacker and Madelyn Matthies each earned points for LQPV/DB, while the Sting got victories from Cherish Hammer and Macie Sik.

LQPV/DB swept all three doubles matches, getting wins from Jessica Sigdahl and Rachel Halvorson, Bree Kallhoff and Veda Maharaj, plus Sarah Halvorson and Kylie Wendinger.

YME travels to Morris Area on Tuesday, while LQPV/DB hosts a triangular with Benson and Montevideo today.
