PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall girls golf places fourth at Minnewaska Invite

MINNEWASKA – Despite Mother Nature doing its best to try and test the Marshall girls golf team with a combination of rain, sleet and some hail, the Tigers still put together a solid round, shooting a team score of 358 to place fourth at the Minnewaska Invite Friday. Detroit Lakes took first with a score of 324, followed by Alexandria in second (330) and Minnewaska/BBE in third (332).

Rachel Schwarz led the way for the Tigers with a career-best 77, finishing second overall as an individual. Olivia Peterson added an 84 while Courtney Toulouse shot a 98 and Ramsey Nelson had a 99. Brooklyn Gossen added a 113 and Hannah Verkinderen shot 115 to round out their scores.

Marshall coach Gretchen Flynn was pleased with her team’s ability to battle through the conditions and stay focused through their round.

“This is the first time Rachel has posted a score in the 70s and to do so in those conditions, and our first 18 hole round of the year, is encouraging. Ramsey Nelson also had a PR 99 for us today so it’s great to see her scores start to come down and expect to see continued improvement over the next couple weeks,” Flynn said. “The team finished 4th behind Detroit Lakes, Alexandria, and Minnewaska, all ranked in the Top 5 in their respective classes. I think the girls did an amazing job staying focused through their rounds despite the weather. The course was unfamiliar to many of the girls and they were able to navigate the difficult course well. The pin placements were challenging and our putting could have been better. We left a lot of shots on the greens so that will be our focus in practice over the coming days.”

Marshall will compete again on Tuesday at home against Redwood Valley.
