MILROY – The rain and thunder that preceded Friday night’s season-opener was not enough to deter the anxious Milroy Irish ballclub from getting in their long-awaited matchup with Stark, as the team came ready to play from the very first pitch at the Irish Yard.

Utilizing opportunistic at-bats, in addition to an error-free performance in the field, the Irish collected their first win of the season in a 6-1 final in front of the home fans.

On the mound for the Irish was Moses Dolan who was efficient in his four innings pitched – tallying a strikeout while giving up one run in the fourth inning and four hits in the process. Luke Walling would eventually take over for Dolan in the fifth inning and threw a clean inning. Tyler Alcorn stepped in to close out the game in the sixth and seventh innings.

At the plate, Milroy was unable to generate any extra-base hits, but were opportunistic with runners in scoring position. The Irish picked up its first two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-out, bases-loaded single by Dominic Dolan to make it 2-1, before Moses Dolan added two more runs on another single to take a 4-1 lead after four.

The Irish continued swinging a hot bat in the fifth inning when pinch-hitter Josh Baker stepped to the plate with runners in scoring position and two outs to deliver an RBI single that brought the crowd to its feet and extended the lead to 5-1.

With a comfortable lead in hand, the Irish added a sixth and final run in the latter half of the sixth inning after leading off the frame with a walk and a fielding error by the Longhorns. Unable to find the gap, Tyler Peterson grounded into a fielder’s choice but brought in the team’s final run of the game.

The Irish will be back in action looking to improve to 2-0 on the season when they travel to Windom for their first road game of the season on Sunday at 2 p.m.
