SMSU BASEBALL: Wayne State jumps out to early lead to sweep Mustangs

WAYNE, Neb. – Wayne State completed a three-game sweep over Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday afternoon earning a 12-2 victory in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.

WSC, currently one of the hottest teams in the NSIC, has won 14 of its last 15 games and improves to 23-8 overall, 14-4 NSIC. SMSU has lost five straight games and drops to 5-17 overall, 4-14 NSIC. Prior to Sunday’s game, the Wildcats closed out Saturday’s suspended game, earning a 10-2 victory. The game was suspended with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

WSC scored early and often on Sunday to build a big early lead. The Wildcats pushed across three runs in the first, a single run in the second and five more in the third to make the score 9-0.

SMSU picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as Kip Gronholz hit a run-scoring single while Ben Heichel connected on an RBI double.

Spencer Rudnik (0-1) started on the mound for SMSU and lasted two-plus inning allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits. Teddy Broxterman allowed five runs on five hits in three innings while Donny Schroeder tossed the final two innings and gave up two runs on four hits.

Matt Bezdicek had two of SMSU’s five hits in the game as WSC held a 15-5 hit advantage.

The Wildcats, who have now won 16 straight over the Mustangs since 2015, finished the series with 35 hits to SMSU’s 17.

Southwest Minnesota State returns to action next weekend Saturday and Sunday with a three-game series at Bemidji State.
