PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Tigers come back to beat Minnesota River

LESUEUR – Trailing by a goal going into the last period, the Marshall boys hockey team knew it needed to put something together if it was going to come away with a win against a tough Minnesota River team.

The Tigers were able to get out to a quick start in the final frame, as Mason Plante scored on a power play off the assist from goaltender Dominik Caspers just 1:03 into the third to tie things up at 3-3. After both teams went back-and-forth with no scoring over the next several minutes, it appeared the game was headed towards an overtime period. But Marshall had one final push and was able to capitalize, with Plante receiving the assist from Tristan VanDeVere before putting it in the back of the net to give the Tigers the go-ahead lead at 4-3 with under a minute to play. Marshall would then hold off the late attempts from Minnesota River to earn the come-from-behind victory.

Marshall was able to start out strong in the opening period, as Landon Frost scored off the assist from Trey Weber and Cole Remme to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead near the midway mark. The Bulldogs quickly responded, though, getting a goal of their own to tie things up at 1-1 after one period of play.

Minnesota River then took its first lead of the night early in the second, but Marshall answered back with a goal from VanDeVere on the assist from Blake Kruse and Bryson Whyte to tie things up at 2-2. A couple of minutes later, Minnesota River scored its second of the frame to take a 3-2 lead and set the stage for the final scoring flurry by Marshall.

Minnesota River outshot Marshall 41-30 on the game. Caspers earned the victory in net, recording 38 saves.

Marshall (18-2-1) will face Willmar on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
