PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall falls to Luverne, 2-1

LUVERNE – The Marshall girls hockey team fell to Luverne 2-1 on Thursday.

The Tigers were able to get out to a good start in the first period, as Sydney Mauch found the back of the net to give Marshall a 1-0 lead, but the Cardinals would answer back with a goal of their own to tie things up at 1-1 after one period of play.

After neither team would find scoring in the second period, the two teams would begin to head down the stretch still deadlocked at 1-1. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Luverne would take a 2-1 lead with 5:25 to go and held on in the end for the one-goal victory.

Luverne outshot Marshall 33-26 on the game. Emma Klenken recorded 31 saves for Marshall.

Marshall (15-5-3) will face Waseca today at 5:30 p.m.

Gymnastics

PIPESTONE – The Marshall gymnastics team defeated Pipestone Area 125.875-118.750 on Thursday.

Saphi McFarquhar led the way for the Tigers with a first-place finish on vault (8.675), uneven bars (8.575), balance beam (8.450) and floor exercise (8.450) to place first in the all-around with a score of 34.150. Cameen McFarquhar added a first-place finish on vault (8.675) as well as second-place finishes on bars (7.825) and floor (8.200) for a third-place finish (31.425) in the all-around.

Leah Matzner added a fifth-place finish on vault (8.425), while Clara Bader placed third on the beam (7.700) and Jordyn Kack placed fifth on the beam (7.225). Kaitlyn Matzner placed fourth on the beam (7.275) and third on floor (7.800) for a fourth-place all-around score of 29.900 to add to the Marshall effort.

Marshall coach Larvita McFarquhar said she was proud of their effort and felt they had a lot of confidence out on the competition floor.

“I was really proud of the team. They had clean routines and were confident out there,” coach McFarquhar said. “They were nailing the new skills they have been working on.”

Marshall will compete again on Monday against New Ulm at 6 p.m. before hosting Luverne next Thursday at 6 p.m. It will also be the team’s “Meet the Tigers” night against the Cardinals.

Boys Basketball

Benson 75,

YME 61

GRANITE FALLS – The Yellow Medicine East boys basketball team fell to Benson 75-61 on Thursday.

Bennett Knapper led the way for the Sting with 25 points while Kyle Chase added 15 and Jahrell Ishmon had 10. Hunter Johnson led in rebounds with nine while Ishmon and Dalton Anderson led in assists with four each.

YME will face Lac qui Parle Valley next Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

Wrestling

TMB triangular

TRACY – The No. 2-ranked Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove Panthers wrestling team put together a trio of dominating performances on Thursday night, picking up a 66-6 win over Luverne, a 78-0 win over Murray County Central/Fulda and a 69-6 win over Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther.

A total of 12 pins were recorded by TMB/WWG over the three duals, including six against MCC/Fulda, four against Luverne and two against M/T/ML. Another 21 weight classes were decided by forfeits (nine vs. M/T/ML, seven vs. MCC/Fulda and five vs. Luverne).

Just four bouts on the night didn’t end in a pin. In the M/T/ML dual, TMB/WWG’s Dereck Ellingson earned a 6-0 decision over Gach Mar at 132. He added a 15-0 technical fall against Luverne’s Braydon Ripka.

Against Luverne, Ayden Horner earned an 8-2 decision over Riley Cowell for the Panthers. Austin Axford recorded a 12-4 major decision over Jed Dooyema.

TMB/WWG hosts Jackson County Central on Jan. 31.
