SMSU TRACK AND FIELD: SMSU opens season with strong debut

MANKATO – The Southwest Minnesota State women’s and men’s indoor track & field teams opened the 2018-19 season on Saturday competing at the Chuck Petersen Open hosted by Minnesota State at the Myers Field House.

One of the many highlights of the day was SMSU sophomore Rebeccas Manteuffel, who broke her own school record in the weight throw, with an NCAA provisional toss of 17.19m to earn second place. She would later set another school mark in the shot put with a third place finish toss of 13.38m.

Freshman Ashlyn Jones had a strong debut taking home third place in the high jump at 1.57m.

On the men’s side, Connor Wigand placed third in the shot put with a throw of 14.64m, while teammate Calvin Knapp placing seventh at 13.69m.

Freshman Andrew Nordquist ran 1:28.60 in the 600 meters to finish second overall, freshman Adarius Gallon hit 6.58m on the long jump to earn fourth place, while another freshman Kyle Felling, ran 50.4 in the 400 meters to record a fourth place finish.

Southwest Minnesota State will return to competition on Jan. 18, 2019, at the South Dakota State D2 Classic.
